Nextbase 522GW vs. Nextbase 622GW Dash Cam Review

Best Dash Cam to Get Next

High resolution dash cameras make a good investment. And when you combine them with advanced tech features, you get not only an extra eye, but also a reliable companion for your daily drives. In this review, we'll look at two of Nextbase's best high-resolution and feature-packed dash cams, the 522GW and the 622GW. Let's see which one should be the first, or next dash cam for you.

Review: Nextbase 522GW Dash Cam

The Nextbase 522GW is a dash cam with some extras. It's useful for recording views from your car on a long road trip or keeping track of your outings around town. More importantly, its image resolution and features are fair enough to give you an eyewitness in the event of an accident.

Nextbase 522GW Image and Video Quality

Despite its compact size, the 522GW records in stunning 1440p HD at 30fps, which can be reduced to 1080p at 60fps or 1080p at 30fps, and has an improved 6G glass lens for capturing important details like road signs and license plates.

The polarizing filter built into the 522GW significantly also reduces windshield glare and reflection, with a rotating bezel that allows you to easily position the lens as needed.

Does the 522GW have Parking Mode?

The 522GW is equipped with an Intelligent Parking Mode feature. As soon as you park your car and the ignition is turned off, the  will automatically enter parking mode. If the G-sensor registers movement in front or when someone bumps your car, it will turn on and record for 30 seconds.

What are the Convenience Features of the Nextbase 522GW?

Built-In Alexa for Intelligent and Handsfree Mode

The 522GW, along with the 422GW, are the first 1440 p dash cams with Alexa, allowing you to record important footage while keeping your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Using voice controls, you can ask Alexa to play music, check the weather, find directions, and more from your dash cam. Alexa can also take photos, send videos to your phone, start and stop recording, and protect your files.

Nextbase Emergency SOS

This is the world's first dash cam with an emergency response system, which is another new innovative feature on the 522GW as well. In the event of an accident, an alert with your location can be sent to emergency services. The alert can send vital medical information such as blood type and medical history to help with efficient treatment.

The 522GW also has Bluetooth 4.2, which automatically sends crash footage to your Bluetooth-enabled phone, QuickLink Wi-Fi for video transfer, and a higher accuracy GPS module for accurate speed and location data.

Click&Go PRO mount in every kit

To make it easy to install, every purchase also comes with a new Click&Go PRO car mount, which is also available in the 522GW. The newly designed mount has a lower profile design and high strength neodymium magnets, allowing you to install and remove the dash cam with one hand.

Does the 522GW have an App?

Apart from having a touch screen, Nextbase still managed to build a mobile app for easier access in the 522GW. MyNextbase Connect™ is an easy-to-use app that will enable you to effortlessly manage and share your videos, edit clips, and check for and install firmware updates.

MyNextbase Cloud

MyNextbase Cloud is Nextbase's free online video sharing service where you can store your files safely and securely. Drivers can use the 'Share Video' function on either MyNextbase Player or the MyNextbase Connect app to upload your file to the Nextbase Server. As an added bonus, you will be able to password-protect your video.

Review: Nextbase 622GW Dash Cam

Nextbase is truly an innovator of quality cameras, evident in the latest 622GW model that is jam-packed with cutting-edge video recording technology - compared to the 522GW, and any other dash cams on its price range.

Nextbase 622GW Image Quality and Recording Capabilities

For starters, it includes a new Ambarella H22 quad-core chipset that enables users to capture pin-sharp 4K footage at 30fps from a 140-degree field of view. If you don't require the highest quality, 1440 p at 60fps or 1080p at 120fps are also options. In addition, they have installed a removable polarizing filter, which allows drivers to rotate a bezel in front of the lens to produce beautiful, glare-free footage.

There is also the option to add a rear dash cam module that records at 1080p/30fps, but this is sold separately. On the plus side, it eliminates the need for a long wire dangling from the rear window because it neatly plugs into the side of the 622GW.

What are the Convenience Features of this 4K dash cam?

The 622GW back panel includes a 3-inch HD IPS touchscreen like the 522GW. It has a few buttons that don't take up too much space on the screen. While looking at the display is the most convenient way to see a live view of the camera, you can also do so using the app on your phone.

Alexa Integration

The 622GW, like the 522GW, has Alexa connectivity. You can control the dash cam with your voice as long as you have the app on your phone. The two built-in microphones in the car that pick up on speech.

Emergency SOS

This feature is also available in the 522GW. If the driver fails to respond, the 622GW knows exactly what to do. The dash cam will automatically notify emergency services near your location. However, it does not stop there. It also gives them access to any medical information you choose to share with the app.

Extreme Weather Mode

The 622GW now has this feature. Because fog and other harsh weather conditions are major causes of traffic accidents, Nextbase created an extreme weather mode. Whether you are involved in or witness an accident, this feature can help you identify vehicles in your footage. It ensures that registration plate numbers can still be detected.

Image Stabilization

This is yet another fresh Nextbase feature. It significantly reduces camera vibrations caused by your car, resulting in a super-smooth and clear image. Adding to stability, the Click&Go magnetic Pro mount makes it very easy to fix in place and remove, and the rear touchscreen is clear and responsive, allowing for a great view out of the windscreen quickly and easily.

Intelligent Parking Mode

This parking mode is also available in the 522GW. When this feature is enabled, it begins recording immediately after detecting impact. As a result, if someone hits or scratches your car in the parking lot, the dash cam will record it.

Super Slow Motion

When you record video in 1080p at 120 frames per second, the dash cam enters Super Slow Motion mode. This feature can be critical in determining what happened during an accident. In most cases, you can rely on it to reveal important information from each clip.

what3words Connectivity

Another main factor the 622GW is one of the best dash cams on the market is its what3words connectivity. Using only its own GPS module, this model can always pinpoint your exact location, limiting your location to a three-meter squared area.

Moreover, the 622GW also has access to the MyNextbase Suite which includes MyNextbase Connect, the mobile app and MyNextbase Player, the desktop app.

Which Nextbase Dash Cam Should I Get Next? Nextbase 522GW vs 622GW 4K Dash Cam

Despite their similar appearances, the video performance of these two dash cams is what distinguishes them. The 522GW can record 1080p Full HD video at 60 frames per second or 1440p video at 30fps, allowing you to choose between higher resolution and a faster, smoother framerate.

The 622GW, on the other hand, can record 1080p Full HD at 120fps, 1440p at 60fps, and 4K at 30fps. Both use a micro SD card slot to save footage, with the 622GW requiring a U3 card with at least 32GB memory card.

With this high resolution capabilities, if the 622GW is too advanced for you, or you can't see a resolution higher than 1440 p anyway, the 522GW is a great budget option.

Take note that both of these dash cams include Alexa, Emergency SOS, GPS, and Intelligent Parking Mode, but let's go over what the 622GW has that the 522GW doesn't: 4K video, Enhanced Night Vision, Extreme Weather Mode, Image Stabilization, and what3words.
