Setting up the BlackVue DR970X-2CH LTE SIM Card

How to set up a BlackVue SIM card for LTE

How to set up LTE

If you want a dash cam that keeps you connected wherever you are in the world, the best you can get is a BlackVue. More than just Bluetooth and dual-band Wi-Fi capabilities, BlackVue has also included built-in 4G LTE capabilities to its flagship dash cams, particularly the all-new DR970X-2CH LTE 4K UHD dash cam, and the BlackVue DR770X-2CH LTE. The following SIM card setup also applies if using the CM100G-LTE, combined with a non-LTE model.

Before you can fully utilize the BlackVue Cloud connectivity and 4G LTE, you have to activate a compatible nano SIM card, just like the rest of the 4G LTE enabled devices you may have. In this article, we will show you how to set up your BlackVue Cloud dash cam, and how to activate your SIM Card.

Things you need

  • Android or iPhone Smartphone
  • BlackVue Smartphone App
  • Your nano SIM Card

Choosing Your SIM Card

When it comes to choosing a SIM card, you can either use the included BlackVue SIM card that comes free in every purchase of a BlackVue LTE dash cam like the DR770X-2CH LTE and the DR970X-2CH LTE.

Or alternatively, you can pick up a SIM card from a local carrier. SIM cards are typically larger than nano, but you can usually carefully snap out the smallest (nano) version of the SIM card, and this tiny chip will be inserted into the BlackVue DR970X-2CH LTE.

You may be asked to provide the IMEI number of the device for which you are using the SIM card with. While the IMEI is not technically needed for a data-only card such as this, keep this information handy when you purchase your SIM card. On the bottom of the DR970X-2CH LTE Box, the IMEI number is printed beneath the serial number.

How to Set Up and Activate Your BlackVue DR970X-2CH LTE SIM Card

1. Create a BlackVue Cloud Account

If you don't already have a BlackVue account, use the BlackVue app to sign up for a free or paid BlackVue Over-the-Cloud account. The free plan is adequate for the majority of users.

To begin, when you open the BlackVue app, it will ask you to sign in or create an account, doing so is needed to get the cloud up and running.

2. Install your nano SIM card to the BlackVue DR970X-2CH LTE

Before the camera is installed, it’s worthwhile to install the SIM card into the camera. Take the mount off the front camera, and using the supplied SIM card tray eject tool in the package, carefully remove the SIM card tray from the 970X-LTE.

Next, place the nano SIM card into the SIM card tray with the tray fully removed, then carefully place the tray and SIM card back into the BlackVue DR970X-2CH-LTE. Seat the SIM card tray fully into the dash cam until it is flush with the camera body.

3. Connect your dash cam via Wi-Fi direct

The Wi-Fi in the BlackVue DR970X-2CH LTE is perpetually on, so it's already turned on once you plug in power to start your dash cam.

Next, pair your smartphone with the BlackVue dash cam via Wi-Fi direct. In the BlackVue app, navigate to the camera tab at the bottom. Once there, press the “+ Camera” button a bit above this BlackVue has a feature called Seamless Pairing which makes the connection process easier:

How to do Seamless Pairing:

Select “Seamless Pairing Model”. The BlackVue app scans for your dash cam and automatically detects it (as long as it is powered, and bluetooth is on, of course). Once your model appears, click on it, and you confirm the connection by tapping the side of the dash cam with the DR970X-2CH LTE’s touch sensor, formerly proximity sensor for the X and X Plus series.

And that’s it. You are now connected and the dash cam is saved in your app for even easier connection later. As soon as you close the app, the connection will cut so you don’t lose your internet on your phone.

How to do Manual Pairing:

Select “Wi-Fi Only Mode”. Next, exit the BlackVue app, and navigate over to the settings of your phone. Choose your BlackVue dashcam from the network list. The dashcam’s default SSID begins with its model number (e.g. BlackVue ****-******). Enter the password and tap join. The default Wi-Fi SSID and password are printed on the BlackVue DR970X-2CH LTE’s label, underneath the mount, or on the interior of the box. Once connected, return to the app, and press continue. After this is done, the app will instruct you to leave the app, and disconnect from the camera’s wifi. Please do so, and once done, your camera will be registered in your camera tab of the BlackVue app.

4. Activate Your BlackVue DR970X-2CH LTE SIM Card

Here, the first step is to open the BlackVue app and head over to the cameras tab. There, if you’ve registered your camera, your camera name should pop up, with 3 dots in the bottom right press on those dots➔ SIM card activation. The SIM card activation may require 20 seconds to retrieve SIM information.

In order to set, APN settings formation will auto-fill in the SIM card activation page. If there is no network carrier, press the magnifying glass on top of this field, and search for your carrier if your carrier does not appear, please select “Other network carrier”. If the APN field does not fill in automatically, then it must be filled manually. Most APN field information can be provided by your network carrier, or found online, for example, the APN that will work with Telus SIM cards is:

“Sp.telus.com”.

Note: If your SIM card is PIN or PUK locked, enter its code as provided in your SIM card package. Incorrect APN setting or non-suggested carrier’s APN setting may lead to failure to connect to the LTE network.

5. Connect Via BlackVue-Over-the-Cloud

Before you proceed to this step, make sure that your SIM Card has been configured already. Once the camera has rebooted, after a few moments you should hear “Cloud connected”.

Once completed successfully, your camera will default to the cloud whenever you press on it’s camera profile, and you can start using Cloud service features such as Remote Live View and Video Playback, Real-time Location, Auto-upload, Remote Firmware Update, and etc.

We recommend pulling up a remote live-view for reference on if the cloud is functioning properly, which should give you exact information on what’s happening at your vehicle in real time!
