Front-only and single-channel dash cams don’t always show the full story.

As the saying goes, two is better than one. While having a single-channel dash cam is more useful than having none, getting a rear dash cam can maximize your driving (and parking) protection, at a fraction of the cost and effort.

A dual-channel, or front and rear dash cam captures the view in front and behind your vehicle, all in one system. Many road accidents occur at low speeds and involve rear-end collisions, and a dash camera installed on your rear will add an extra level of security, and it may be the answer to resolving insurance disputes and claims. Rear cameras are especially useful in parking situations, ensuring full coverage around the vehicle, regardless of how you park.

Is having a rear dash cam better than having two separate one-channel dash cams?

For us, choosing a dual-channel dash cam that includes a rear camera is a wiser option compared to having two completely separate one-channel systems. Rear cameras are built to be more discreet compared to chunky front cameras which control all of the processing for both units. Beyond that, rear cameras turn out to be a much more affordable option, as adding a small rear camera will frequently be a fraction of the cost of another system, which would require its own power wiring, SD card, and time spent managing it.

What is the difference between the rear cameras of different models?

Similar to front-only dash cams, rear cameras vary depending on their image sensor and video resolution. Most rear cameras record in Full HD/1080P, due to their small size, and relying on the front camera for processing. Still, modern dash cams like the Thinkware U3000, Thinkware Q1000 and the VIOFO A229 Duo have already upgraded rear cameras with 2K QHD, bringing more vibrant colours and crisper footage.

How do I install a rear dash cam?

Just like installing a front dashcam, installing a rear camera is also easy, and just requires a few additional steps. Every package of a dual-channel dash cam comes with a rear camera cable, which will be used to connect the devices from the front and rear windshield or liftgates of your vehicle. Here’s a quick run-through on how to install one:

    1. Position the rear camera at the top center of your rear windshield. This location covers the maximum amount of view from left to right. Try to avoid the defrost lines from obstructing the camera’s view.
    2. Route the rear camera cable inside the headliner of your rear windshield.

    3. Continue routing the rear camera cable through by placing the rear camera cable inside the weather stripe and through the C, B and A pillar.

    4. Once you’ve reached the A Pillar, proceed to route the rear camera cable through the front windshield’s headliner until you reach the front dash cam. Plug your rear camera cable into the front dash cam to finish the installation.
